| The people of Navlakhi have yet to recover from the 1998 cyclone. It
is an example of the way people and places can spiral down into increasing vulnerability
with every disaster. The people here are living without electricity and water (water is
delivered every day but has to be paid for). They have no job now with the local
company. They have no school and the nearest health centre is 17 kilometres away. A major
local industry is the salt industry. SEWA (Self-Employed Women's Association) reports that
the salt-pans in the deserts, have been damaged. The salt crystallisation has also been
damaged and this has resulted in heavy losses to the salt farmers. They report that the
salt-pans will have to be rebuilt as a matter of urgency as any delay, will lead to
failure of salt crystallisation and failure of salt production. |
